Do You Need Repiping or Just a Repair?

A single leak usually calls for a repair; a pattern of leaks calls for repiping. The deciding factors are how often your pipes fail, how old they are, and what they're made of — so we start with a camera inspection to see the real condition before recommending anything.

  • Repair makes sense for an isolated leak or crack in otherwise sound pipe — see our burst & broken pipe repair.
  • Repiping makes sense when leaks keep coming back, pressure is low everywhere, or the pipe material is at the end of its life.

We won't recommend a repipe when a repair will do — the camera footage shows you exactly why we're advising one or the other.

Signs Your St. Petersburg Home Needs Repiping

Repiping is usually the right call when the whole system is failing, not just one spot. Watch for these signs, especially in homes built before 1990.

  • Frequent leaks — repeated leaks and water damage across different fixtures.
  • Rust-colored or metallic water — a sign of corroding galvanized steel pipe.
  • Low water pressure throughout the home as corrosion narrows the pipes.
  • Outdated material — galvanized, polybutylene, or lead pipe common in older St. Pete homes.

How Long Do Pipes Last?

Pipe lifespan depends on the material, the water, and the install. Several materials found in older St. Petersburg homes are now considered replace-on-sight, either because they fail early or because they affect water quality.

Pipe materialAverage lifespanNotes
PVC100+ yearsModern, durable drain material.
Cast iron75–100 yearsCommon in older St. Pete drains; cracks with age.
Copper70–80 yearsReliable, but hard water causes pinhole leaks.
Galvanized steel40–100 yearsCorrodes from the inside — rust-colored water; replace.
LeadUp to 100 yearsDrinking-water hazard — replace as a priority.
Polybutylene10–25 yearsFailure-prone (1980s–90s); replace rather than repair.

Lead and older galvanized pipe can affect drinking water; the U.S. EPA recommends replacing lead service lines entirely. If your home still has either, repiping protects both your plumbing and your water.

PEX vs. Copper: What We Repipe With

We repipe with either PEX or copper depending on your home, budget, and where the lines run. Both are reliable, modern materials — here's how they compare.

St. Petersburg's Rebate Can Cover Sewer Pipe Replacement

If the pipe that needs replacing is your sewer lateral — the line connecting your home to the city sewer — the City of St. Petersburg may pay for it. The Private Lateral Rehabilitation Rebate Program covers eligible single-family homeowners to replace aging Orangeburg and cast-iron laterals.

How it works: Phase 1 (launched June 2025) covers the full cost in targeted high-infiltration neighborhoods, including Historic Old Northeast, North Kenwood, Allendale, Coquina Key, and Bahama Shores. Phase 2, expected around October 2026, opens citywide with rebates up to $5,000. The program requires a CCTV camera inspection to document the pipe — which we perform. Eligibility and amounts are set by the City; see the official program page.

This rebate applies to sewer laterals, not interior water-supply repiping — but if your home needs both, we can handle the full scope and help you apply for the lateral portion.

How Much Does Repiping Cost?

Repiping is an investment, and the price depends on your home's size, the pipe material, and how accessible the lines are. We give you a firm quote after the camera inspection — no guesswork, and financing is available to spread the cost.

Cost factorWhy it changes your price
Home sizeMore bathrooms and longer pipe runs mean more material and labor.
Pipe materialPEX is generally more affordable than a full copper repipe.
AccessPipe in open walls or a crawlspace is faster than pipe under a slab.
ScopeWhole-home supply, sewer lateral, or both changes the total.
RestorationPatching drywall and finishes after the repipe adds to the job.

Over time, repiping usually costs less than paying for one leak repair after another — and it ends the rust, pressure, and water-damage problems for good.

Repiping FAQs

How do I know if I need to repipe my house?
Repiping is usually the right call when you have frequent leaks across different fixtures, rust-colored water, or low water pressure throughout the home — especially in houses built before 1990 with galvanized, polybutylene, or lead pipe. A single isolated leak normally just needs a repair. Flow Pros runs a camera inspection to confirm the pipe's condition before recommending a repipe.
What's the best pipe material for repiping?
For most whole-home repipes, PEX is the practical choice — it's flexible, has fewer joints, installs faster, and costs less, with a 40 to 50 year lifespan. Copper lasts longer (70 to 80 years) and is used for exposed runs or where code requires it, but costs more. We recommend the material that fits your home and budget after seeing the layout.
How long does a whole-home repipe take?
Most residential repipes take a few days, depending on the home's size and how accessible the pipes are. We work to minimize disruption, keep water service interruptions short, and patch the openings when the new lines are in. You'll get a clear timeline with your quote before we start.
Does repiping increase home value?
Yes. An updated, modern plumbing system is a selling point that removes a common inspection red flag, prevents future water damage, and improves water quality and pressure. Replacing old galvanized, polybutylene, or lead pipe also reassures buyers and can ease real estate closings.
Does St. Petersburg help pay for sewer pipe replacement?
Yes, for sewer laterals. The City of St. Petersburg's Private Lateral Rehabilitation Rebate Program reimburses eligible single-family homeowners for replacing their private sewer lateral. Phase 1 covers the full cost in targeted neighborhoods; Phase 2 (expected around October 2026) opens citywide with rebates up to $5,000. It requires a camera inspection, which Flow Pros performs. The rebate is for sewer laterals, not interior water-supply repiping.
